: What are the pros and cons of part-time MBA?
Answer : Opt for a part-time MBA only if the income
that you earn forms a significant part of your or your family's livelihood.
Part-time MBAs is ideal for those
who have a considerable amount of work experience and are now looking
at moving up the corporate ladder. It is also for those who don't want
a drastic change
but want to move ahead in their existing line of work or want to know
more about management. Question
: Can my managerial aptitude be increased?
Answer : The objective of the MBA program is to eke out the manager in you. There are
quite a lot of qualities a manager possesses, such as leadership skills, strong
communication skills and so on. For some people these qualities are portrayed
in their day-to-day activities. But for some, they are dormant. The key to
answering this question is whether there is a will in you to learn. If there
is, then an MBA program from a good B-school will make sure that it gets the
best out of you.
Question : When should I start studying for MBA entrance exams?
Answer : That's the question foremost in the minds of most students. Our experts suggest
that the ideal time to start your preparation depends on a number of parameters
including:
1. What your existing competence is, in the areas tested
2. The amount of time you can dedicate to your preparation
3. The institutes that you are targeting for application With the increasing difficulty level of the CAT, it is highly
recommended that you start your preparation as soon as you
have decided that you are serious about a career in management.
Though for most 'good' candidates, 3-4hrs a day for 6-8 months
is sufficient.
Question
: What extra do I need to put in?
Answer : Cracking entrances is all about getting your basics right. Apart from that,
practising exercises like speed-reading and random Maths calculations can also
help you. Do eclectic reading like the editorials of a newspaper, practise
formulae and you will be playing a totally different ball game.
Question : Investing another two years in an MBA program? Is it a good decision?
Answer : Well, your question has the answer in it. MBA is an investment, one that might
not provide you immediate financial or career returns, but two years down the
line when you walk through the mean streets armed with an MBA degree, all the
sweat will be worth it. Finances should not stop you from applying for an MBA,
financial aid is easily available. Question
: I want to do my MBA from India's top B-school. But why
should I focus only on the IIMs?
Answer : IIMs are without a shadow of doubt India's premier institutes. They are far
beyond all other B-schools with respect to infrastructure, placements, faculty
and learning environment. But, everyone can't go there, and the number of people
taking the CAT each year is only increasing, hence it is extremely important
to also apply to other B-schools in the Top 10-15 if it is an MBA you want. Question
: What if I don't get into an IIM? Should I settle for
another B-school or take the CAT again?
Answer : It depends on what you settle for. There are other institutes such as JBIMS,
IMT Ghaziabad and TAPMI that are doing quite well. Check the Pegasus top B-school
list. An MBA from B-schools in Clusters 1 - 3 will be a good choice. Go for
the rest only if you have to do your MBA this year. Else taking the CAT again
would not be a bad idea. Question
: Will I get financial aid for my education?
Answer : Most B-schools do not offer financial aid. IIMs are the only B-schools that
have a policy of not denying any deserving candidate admission due to lack
of funds. However, it is still easy to get financial aid for doing an MBA,
especially if you are going to any of the top ten B-schools. Banks are willing
to give student loans to aspiring MBAs and you have to repay these only after
you start working. Considering that you will be going to a top B-school,
finding a high paying job should not be difficult at all.
Question
: I'm interested in an pursuing an MBA degree but at 35, am concerned that
I'm too old for many schools to consider.
Answer : Well, you are never too old to study so your age shouldn't stop you from pursuing
an MBA. The only question you need to ask yourself is, do you need a full-time
MBA or will a part-time program fulfill your need.
Question : What is the most important factor for a B-school when choosing an MBA
candidate?
Answer : To begin with, your aptitude. This is tested in the entrances. Entrances are
screening tests. Once you clear the entrance phase will you get to interface
with faculty from the B-school itself. As far as other skills are concerned:
B-schools look for clarity of goals, communication skills and your honesty,
which they test in the phase two of their entrance with various personality
assessment tools. Question
: I'm having trouble narrowing down my list of possible
schools. How many would you recommend I should apply
to?
Answer : There is no ideal number to apply to. But don't apply to all the B-schools
that you know of, apply smartly and effectively. Identify your interest area
or the specialization you want to pursue and then accordingly shortlist those
B-schools for applications. It's always better to err on the safer side and
apply to a couple of extra schools rather than to too few.
Question : Do you think that business school fees are on the rise and, if so, do
you expect this to accelerate over the next five years?
Answer : Inflation has affected all service sectors and education has been no exception.
With the demand and constant effort to meet international standard of learning,
there has been considerable increase in B-school fees. There will be but only
moderate fluctuations, with regard to the services provided.
Question : I have a low CAT score. What other factors can I use to impress admissions
committees?
Answer : If you have work experience, make sure you make good use of that. If not, be
sure you are thorough with the subjects you studied in college. Remember, if
you have made it to Round 2 inspite of your low CAT score, you stand an even
chance of final selection. Be confident; be clear of what you want. Be honest
and best of luck.
Question : How many years of work experience is sufficient?
Answer : Usually 2-3 years of work experience is sufficient. B-schools have started
a trend of lateral placements where students with 2-3 years of work experience
get placed even before their regular placements.
Question : Do I have to be a graduate from a premier college?
Answer : No. It is not necessary that students need to be from premier colleges. You
get into a B-school on the basis of your performance in the entrance exams
conducted by the B-schools themselves. Question
: How will my
campus preference influence my chances for admission?
Answer : Your campus selection has no impact on your admissions decision.
In fact, the Admissions Committee, which makes all final
admission decisions, does not have access to information
about candidates' campus preferences. Question
: I don't have a business background. Will this impact my chances
for admission?
Answer : At BIGCE, we value diversity at every level. We welcome applications
from people with a variety of professional and academic backgrounds,
including the arts, law, non-profit, etc. No matter the field
of your professional and academic background, we will be looking
for you to demonstrate your potential as a leader, and we will
consider your professional experience and past performance
when assessing your application.
Question
: What is an MBA?
Answer : An MBA is a post graduate degree in business communication. MBA stands for
Masters of Business Administration and is a very popular course for business
students the world over. The MBA program is recognized worldwide and is considered
as a major step towards a successful business management career.
Question
: What will I gain from doing an MBA?
Answer : An MBA program strives to equip its students with all the necessary knowledge,
theoretical as well as practical, which can benefit them tremendously in managerial
and administrative jobs. This does not apply only to business, as is usually
understood by most people, but can also benefit people to get into executive
positions in the public sector and government jobs as well.
Question
: What skills will I pick up from doing an MBA?
Answer : You will learn a range of valuable skills from the MBA program, such as:
Business Knowledge:
The MBA program and business schools give you valuable knowledge about business
and all its related aspects. You learn about business strategies and concepts,
not just on paper, but the training and internship required in an MBA course,
teaches you how to use these skills in practical life and in day to day business
operations.
Leadership Abilities:
An MBA degree involves rigorous training, assignments, reports, presentations,
and group projects, all of which give you the necessary abilities to handle
real-life business situations. This helps to set you apart from those who do
not have such expertise and can make you a leader in your chosen field.
Networking:
The alliances that you form with your classmates and the network that you create
is deemed as one of the most important and valuable things that an MBA program
can give you. MBA graduates have often felt that the associations formed during
the MBA course are resources that are invaluable and can be drawn upon for
years after the MBA degree has been achieved. Question
: Who is eligible for these programs?
Answer : While most schools and educational institutions that offer MBA programs have
their respective criteria for getting into an MBA course, the two most significant
factors that are common to most schools and MBA courses are:
Age and Experience:
The average age of students applying for the MBA is about 26-30 years. Most
schools require their applicants to have 4-5 years of prior work experience
before joining an MBA course. Since experience is usually believed to come
with age, those under 25 are generally not accepted for an MBA program as it
is assumed that such students do not have the required work experience.
GMAT Score:
Having a GMAT score in excess of 600 is essential if you wish to get into the
A grade MBA schools. Although just a good GMAT score is not a guarantee for
admission to an MBA program, it does better your chances tremendously.
Question
: Will an MBA improve my career prospects?
Answer : An MBA degree provides you with innumerable career opportunities in various
fields. It is especially beneficial to get jobs in high level positions such
as managerial and executive level jobs. Whether you are looking to further
your career in your existing job or are looking to change your job and start
your career afresh, an MBA degree can be very valuable in either scenario.
With an MBA degree under their belt, employees have a whole new world
opened up to them and are elevated to managerial positions on the strength
of the
additional abilities and knowledge gained through the MBA program. If
you are looking for a change in careers, an MBA degree can be invaluable
in careers
such as: Marketing ,
Finance ,
Government positions ,
Ability to improve your own business
Question
: Why get an MBA ?
Answer : An MBA qualified manager is highly regarded and often given serious consideration
for senior/top management positions in the industry.
Question
: What is the minimum qualification to get in ?
Answer : Almost every institute that you ask will require you to have at least your
bachelors' degree, whichever the discipline, be it economics, pharmacy, engineering,
accounting, science, information technology, or commerce. The other qualification
is work experience. Most will insist on 3 to 5 years as a minimum. This is
to ensure that the candidate has reached a certain level of maturity when they
apply.
If you are a fresh graduate, it may be a bit difficult for you to get in, unless
you have excellent results. Our advice to you is to get that work experience
first. Why ? This is so that you can appreciate the MBA even more and you will
gain a deeper level of understanding and learning when you exchange ideas in
your class discussions. MBA stresses on practical experience rather than academic
that is why the institutes insists on work experience.
Question
: How long does an MBA course take ?
Answer : Depending on the program you join, it can be anything between 12 months to
7 years. Yes, seven years ! But most complete within 18 to 24 months. Trust
me, you don’t want to be on an MBA course for longer than that!
Question
: How are the classes conducted ?
Answer : Classes are conducted with lectures with the usual assignments and exams. Most
would require some group assignment where team work is required. For the part
time programs, classes are conducted either weekdays (evenings, usually from
6pm to 9pm) or weekends (usually one full day, from 9:30am to 6 or 7pm). There
also residencies i.e. the class is conducted for one whole week continuously
for a week or two, sometimes three, at a hotel (usually out of town). You will
need to take leave from your work for that.
Question
: What are the admission requirements for the MBA program?
Answer : Students with a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution may apply
for admittance into the Excelsior College MBA program. After they are accepted
and enrolled in the program, provisional measures may be recommended to ensure
successful degree completion. The GMAT is not required.
Question
: What is the MBA program application process?
Answer : Students interested in applying to the Excelsior College MBA program must submit
an application, a $100 application fee, and official copies of their undergraduate
bachelors degree and any graduate-level coursework they want to be considered
for transfer credit. Once accepted, students will receive their official evaluation,
